Theo Beerendonk
Biography and Education
Theodorus Hendricus Johannes (Theo) Beerendonk was born on December 25, 1905, in Amsterdam and died in 1979. From 1925 to 1931, he trained at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, where he received a thorough classical painting education under the guidance of professors JH Jurres and Hendrik Jan Wolter.
Artistic Development and Works
Beerendonk built up an impressive oeuvre at a rapid pace. His work included portraits, still lifes, and nudes, in which his distinctive use of color was particularly striking. In the 1930s, he gained fame with his daring nudes, entirely in the tradition of prominent artists such as George Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israëls, and Jan Sluijters.
In addition to painting, Beerendonk devoted himself to etching. In this field, he developed into a true master and mastered all techniques.
Organizations and Memberships
Beerendonk was active in various art organizations. He was a member of the Maatschappij Rembrandt (1944), St.-Lucas Amsterdam (1944), and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, where he was a member until 1956 and became vice-chairman from 1957.
Stylistic Change and Curatorship
After the Second World War, Beerendonk began to stylize and abstract his subjects, causing his work to gradually become more abstract. In 1966, he was appointed curator at the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam. Here, he also gave demonstrations in etching.
Exhibitions and Collections
Beerendonk's work was exhibited not only in the Netherlands but also abroad, including Oslo, Toulouse, Johannesburg, the former Dutch East Indies, Anzio/Rome, and Paris. His works have been acquired by, among others, the Singer Museum in Laren, the Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum Civico in Italy, Museum De Wieger in Deurne, Atlas Dreesmann, and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
